The Invalides are a complex of buildings in the 7th arrondissement containing museums and monuments, all relating to the military history of France, as well as a hospital and a retirement home for war veterans, the building's original purpose. It is also the burial site for some of France's war heroes (Napoléon). The Eiffel Tower is an iron tower built on the Champ de Mars beside the River Seine in Paris. The tower has become a global icon of France and is one of the most recognizable structures in the world. The structure was built between 1887 and 1889 as the entrance arch for the Exposition Universelle. The structure is 324 m (1,063 ft) high (since 2000), which is equivalent to about 81 levels in a conventional building. The Musée d'Orsay, situated on the left bank of the Seine, is housed in the former railway station, the Gare d'Orsay. It holds mainly French art dating from 1848 to 1914, including paintings, sculptures, furniture, and photography, and is probably best known for its extensive collection of Impressionist masterpieces by popular painters such as Monet and Renoir.
